Alzheimer: Support Group Thu 2:00 PM

The RVSC Self-Help Support Group for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease is dedicated to a vital mission. Our aim is to foster an environment of genuine hospitality while providing valuable support to caregivers who are caring for individuals afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Within the framework of our purpose, this self-help support group seeks to empower its members through a unique blend of emotional and cognitive learning. Caregivers are encouraged to openly share their experiences, demonstrating how they maintain both their physical and mental well-being amidst the challenges of caregiving.

The operation of this self-help support group revolves around a core focus on caregiving itself. We emphasize key principles.

Firstly, we encourage caregivers to understand and respect their personal limits and capabilities, advocating for self-care above all else. It is crucial not to push these boundaries to the brink.

Secondly, we guide our members to establish their own life rhythms, ensuring they can balance caregiving responsibilities with personal needs.

Additionally, we promote the importance of creating lifelines and the ability to ask for help when needed, recognizing that caregiving is a journey best shared.

Lastly, we emphasize the importance of knowing when to let go and relinquish control, as this can be a significant part of the caregiving process.

To facilitate these objectives, our self-help support group is led by two dedicated facilitators, Donna and Curtiss. Their role is pivotal in orchestrating the blend of emotional and cognitive learning that occurs within the group. They carefully monitor the dynamics to ensure that members have the space to express themselves without causing harm to others. Importantly, their guidance ensures that our group remains focused on caregivers and never deviates into a clinical therapy setting. They are also knowledgeable about additional resources and assist in providing relevant reading materials to group members.

Our self-help group meetings follow a structured outline:

We meet at RVSC in the same room, ensuring a familiar and comfortable setting, often in the library. Meetings are held behind closed doors to maintain confidentiality.  We gather every Thursday at 2:00 pm, providing consistency and predictability. The meetings are concise, lasting only one hour, to respect the time commitments of our members. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and if necessary, a timekeeper ensures fairness and inclusivity.

In our group, we draw inspiration from Mother Teresa’s wisdom, emphasizing that we “do little things with great love.” This sentiment underlines our commitment to supporting caregivers in their noble and challenging role
